Market participants remain optimistic about the long-term outlook for China's artificial intelligence ecosystem.
According to Reuters, the benchmark CSI300 Index and the Shanghai Composite Index were both trading about 0.5% higher in mid-morning trade after opening weaker. The gains came as investors looked beyond concerns surrounding the massive listing and focused on the broader implications for China's semiconductor industry.
CXMT's shares surged around 500% on their Shanghai debut, propelling the company's market capitalization above 3 trillion yuan (about $443 billion). The sharp rally briefly made the chipmaker China's most valuable listed company by market capitalization, surpassing Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
The successful listing comes at a crucial time for Chinese markets, which have been under pressure in recent weeks. Regulators have introduced a series of supportive measures to stabilize markets after a sharp selloff erased more than $1.5 trillion in market value during the month.
China's benchmark stock index has declined more than 6% this month, weighed down by weakness in technology and small-cap shares. Investor sentiment has been hurt by renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, stock deleveraging in South Korea, and persistent selling by domestic quantitative investment funds, according to Reuters.
Despite initial fears that such a large IPO could absorb significant market liquidity, the broader market remained resilient. Investors appeared to take the successful completion of the listing as a positive signal for China's capital markets and semiconductor ambitions.
The semiconductor sector, however, witnessed mixed trading. Chipmaking and semiconductor stocks came under pressure as portfolio managers adjusted their holdings following CXMT's listing. In contrast, companies involved in semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment advanced, reflecting expectations that the fresh capital raised by CXMT would accelerate capacity expansion and create new business opportunities for upstream suppliers.
Market participants remain optimistic about the long-term outlook for China's artificial intelligence ecosystem. Continued investments by major technology companies and infrastructure providers are expected to support demand across the semiconductor supply chain, reinforcing expectations that AI-related spending will remain a key driver for the sector in the coming years.
The strong debut of CXMT has provided a temporary boost to investor confidence, but analysts believe the broader technology sector will require fresh catalysts to sustain momentum after one of the largest IPOs in China's market history.
