HDFC Securities now speaks to customers in Gujarati!

In a bid to tap the large number of Gujarati share traders, HDFC Securities, stock broking arm of HDFC Bank, has launched a toll-free Gujarati language call centre for its online customers.

MUMBAI: In a bid to tap the large number of Gujarati share traders, HDFC Securities, stock broking arm of HDFC Bank, has launched a toll-free Gujarati language call centre for its online customers.

Indian bourses have always had a large number of traders from Gujarat and around 60 per cent of National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) customer base is from the western region of the country.

The call centre, running round-the-clock on all days, is receiving 500-700 calls a day, an HDFC Bank spokesperson said.

"It is critical to understand what customers want and offer them products they need. To add a local flavour, we are now talking to customers in their own language," he said.

The call centre today employs 40 people to handle the Gujarati desk and would ramp it up as per demand.

The callers can resolve their queries on a bouquet of services including online trading, e-broking, personal finance etc.

Looking at the encouraging response, the company would offer language services in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Punjabi on similar lines.

"As the securities business is an extension of the HDFC Bank, we believe the helpline will provide significant opportunity for cross-sell among two sets of customers," he said.

HDFC Securities have a customer base of over five lakh subscribers. The company ended the FY'08 with a total income of Rs 130.21 crore and net profit of Rs 11.52 crore.
