Rupee ends weak at 39.3250/3350 per dollar
The rupee ended slightly weak at 39.3250/3350 against the US currency after touching a low of 39.40 in early trade, influenced by a meltdown in global equity markets.
In active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee recovered from its initial lows and touched the intra-day high of 39.31 on the back of weak dollar overseas as well as soaring global crude prices. Yesterday, the Indian currency closed at 39.30/31 a dollar yesterday.
The rupee sentiment was mainly influenced by weakness in global markets with indices in Asia and US falling sharply at close, forex dealers said.
Reacting negatively to weakness in equity markets, the local currency recovered major part of its losses during the day drawing support from weakness in the greenback in overseas markets, commented a dealer with foreign bank.
The Reserve Bank had intervened aggressively to contain the rupee's surge in the last three days during the week.
The benchmark Sensex today tumbled by 231 points or 1.2 per cent on weak global cues.
