If your washing machine has suddenly started taking much longer to fill with water, don't assume the appliance has developed a major fault. In many cases, the real issue is much smaller. A clogged water inlet filter can reduce the water flow into the machine, leading to longer wash cycles, poor cleaning performance and, in some cases, water inlet error codes.

The good part is that this is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do at home. It usually takes around 10 minutes and doesn't require any special tools or a service visit.

Why the water inlet filter gets blocked

The water inlet filter is a small mesh screen placed where the inlet hose connects to the washing machine. Its purpose is simple. It stops sand, rust particles, dirt and other debris from entering the machine's internal valve.


As the filter does its job, these particles gradually collect on the mesh. Over time, the buildup restricts water flow. The problem can become more noticeable during the monsoon, when municipal water often carries more silt and impurities because of pipeline disturbances and changing water conditions. Homes with hard water may also experience faster mineral deposits on the filter.

If your washing machine has separate hot and cold water connections, remember that both inlet valves have their own filters. One side may become blocked more than the other depending on the water supply.

Signs your washing machine filter needs cleaning

A blocked inlet filter usually shows a few common warning signs before it becomes a bigger problem. You may notice:

  • The washing machine takes much longer than usual to fill with water.
  • Clothes are not getting cleaned properly because there isn't enough water during the wash.
  • The machine displays a water inlet or fill error code.
  • The wash cycle pauses or stops midway.
  • Water flow into the machine appears weaker than before.

Ignoring these signs can put additional strain on the water pump and other internal parts over time.

How to clean the water inlet filter

Start by switching off the washing machine and unplugging it from the power socket. Then turn off the water supply connected to the appliance before disconnecting the hose.

Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine. Keep a towel nearby because some water may spill out. Inside the connection, you will find a small mesh filter. Depending on the washing machine model, it may be inside the inlet valve or attached to the hose end.

Carefully remove the filter using your fingers. If it feels stuck, use a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull gently to avoid damaging it.

Rinse the filter under running water until the dirt is removed. If mineral deposits or stubborn grime remain, scrub the mesh gently with an old toothbrush. There is no need to use soap, detergent or chemicals.

Once the mesh is clean and water can pass through freely, place the filter back in its original position, reconnect the inlet hose securely and tighten it properly. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks before plugging the washing machine back in.

How often should you clean it?

The cleaning schedule depends largely on your local water quality.

During the monsoon, checking the filter every three to four weeks is a good idea because sediment levels are often higher. If you live in an area with hard water or high iron content, cleaning it once a month can help prevent mineral buildup. In places with relatively clean water, inspecting and cleaning the filter every two to three months is generally enough.

If you notice slower water flow or a water inlet error before the next scheduled cleaning, it's worth checking the filter straight away.

A small job that can prevent bigger repairs

Regularly cleaning the water inlet filter helps maintain proper water flow, allowing detergent to dissolve and rinse more effectively. It also reduces unnecessary pressure on the water pump and motor, which may help extend the washing machine's lifespan.

Before booking a technician for a slow-filling washing machine, it's worth spending a few minutes checking this small mesh filter. In many cases, a simple rinse is all that's needed to get the machine working normally again.
