‘You are too valuable’: Gen Z employee denied promotion despite being a top performer teaches HR manager a lesson
A top-performing Gen Z employee was denied a promotion by the HR manager at her company. The company cited her indispensability in her current role as the reason. She then began performing only the minimum required tasks for her job. This chang...

Top Gen Z performer overlooked despite exceeding expectations
As per the post, the Gen Z employee was informed by the HR manager that they would not be promoted as the company was evaluating other candidates. Confused by the decision, the employee sought clarity and asked whether they lacked the required qualifications or had failed to meet expectations.
The HR manager acknowledged that the Gen Z employee was fully qualified, had consistently achieved every target and deadline, and had even taken on responsibilities far beyond the original job description. When she questioned why such performance had still not translated into a promotion, the HR manager explained that the problem was not capability but value.
According to the company, the Gen Z employee had become so indispensable in the current position that replacing them would require hiring 2 or even 3 people. As a result, the organisation believed it was more beneficial to retain the employee in the existing role rather than move them into a higher position.
Gen Z employee does the bare minimum at work
The explanation led the Gen Z employee to conclude that consistently going above and beyond had effectively worked against their career progression, while doing only the minimum might have resulted in better promotion prospects. The HR manager admitted that such an outcome was possible.
2 months later, the HR manager noticed a significant decline in the Gen Z employee's performance and raised concerns. The professional then explained that she had simply started doing only what the job required. Having realised that exceptional effort had become the very reason for being overlooked for a promotion, she decided to match her performance to the expectations she believed the company had set through its decision.
