A Gurgaon-based food content creator has found herself at the centre of a social media debate after revealing that her husband pays her Rs 1,000 every time she prepares a café-style meal at home. What began as a light-hearted arrangement between the couple has now turned into a wider conversation about unpaid domestic work, appreciation in relationships and whether household labour should have a monetary value.

The Instagram video, which has crossed 1.2 million views, drew both praise and criticism. While some viewers called the idea practical and refreshing, others accused her of turning marriage into a financial transaction.

The viral video that started the discussion

Priya, a food content creator from Gurgaon, explained in her video that she and her husband have a financial agreement whenever she recreates restaurant-quality dishes at home.


She says in the video, "I charge my husband a thousand rupees per meal. There is a financial contract between me and my husband. I make the food taste and look cafe-like while he pays for it. I know many people will say that that’s what a wife does but this wife doesn’t."

She further added, "For generations, women have been doing it all. When you can pay for the same food by eating out, it is more convenient. Money stays in home, efforts are being appreciated and we both enjoying the recipes overall. While I do that why don’t you try it too?"

The meal featured in the now-viral clip was Dan Dan Noodles. She captioned the post, "I meannn… Who won’t pay for a plate like that Ft. Dan Dan Noodles."

It began as a joke after marriage

After the video gained attention, Priya clarified that many people had misunderstood the idea behind the arrangement.

According to her, the practice started as a joke while discussing household responsibilities after marriage. She had jokingly told her husband that if she was making café-style food at home, it should have some value. Her husband decided to take the idea seriously, and it gradually became a tradition in their home.

She has said the payment is not about keeping financial accounts between husband and wife. Instead, it is meant to acknowledge the planning, ingredients, creativity, presentation and time that go into preparing elaborate meals.

Priya also explained that the money stays within the family and is not being spent on personal expenses. Reports say she saves around Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 a month from these payments and plans to use it to start her own food business in the future.

Originally from Chandigarh, Priya previously ran a fashion design business for five years before becoming a food content creator. Her husband works as an architect.

Internet remains divided

The video received mixed reactions online.

One user joked, "So I assume you will also charge him to deliver his babies."

Another wrote, "Such a bad idea! We gotta do something out of love for our family, & cooking is also one of them. Please don't promote such a materialistic mindset because relationships around are already fragile. And yeah, you can do it once out of fun, but not regularly."

Others supported the couple's arrangement.

Priya has maintained that her intention was never to encourage couples to charge each other, but to highlight the often-overlooked effort behind domestic work and the importance of appreciating it.
