The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 is moving in a very different direction after just two episodes. Following the explosive season premiere, episode 2, titled Haven, delivers another major twist by bringing one of the show's biggest villains to an end while laying the groundwork for fresh conflicts. The episode also pushes Maggie and Negan into difficult moral territory, raises new questions about their uneasy partnership and sets up what could become the biggest challenge yet for Maggie's vision of rebuilding Manhattan. Maggie begins rebuilding Manhattan despite Negan's warning

The second episode of season 3 aired on August 2 and was written by Matthew Negrete. The cast includes Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jimmi Simpson, Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Logan Kim and Michael Emery.


After weeks of surviving in a dangerous Manhattan, Maggie finally finds stability at a fortified hospital, where she plans to co-lead a growing community alongside newcomer Renata. Instead of simply fighting to stay alive, Maggie wants to create a safe place where survivors can rebuild their lives.

Negan, however, is far less optimistic. He believes trusting too many people could put everyone in danger and repeatedly questions Maggie's decision to keep the Dama alive after everything she has done.

Despite his concerns, Maggie decides to expand the community's reach into Central Park. The episode ends with Maggie and Renata relighting the Statue of Liberty as a beacon to invite more survivors into Manhattan. For Maggie, it represents hope and a chance to prove people can still change, something she believes Negan himself has demonstrated.

The Dama finally meets her end

One of the biggest developments in Haven is the fate of the Dama.

Following the death of the Croat in the season premiere, the Dama attempts to rebuild her influence by gathering a small group of followers inside an abandoned theatre. Maggie, Negan and Perlie Armstrong track them down, leading to a violent confrontation that wipes out nearly all of her supporters.

Negan immediately tries to kill the Dama, believing she remains too dangerous to be left alive. Maggie intervenes and instead chooses to imprison her at the hospital, hoping there is another way to deal with the situation.

That decision does not last long.

Later, Maggie discovers what appears to be the Dama's body after she seemingly dies from a knife wound. However, the scene strongly hints there is much more to her death than meets the eye.

While the episode never directly shows the killing, it heavily suggests Negan secretly murdered the Dama after deciding Maggie's compassion would eventually put the community at risk. Maggie quickly suspects someone else was responsible, setting up another possible conflict between the two leads.

Critics divided over episode 2

The latest episode has received mixed reactions from critics.

Ready Steady Cut criticised Haven, arguing that the episode creates conflict mainly to keep the Dama's storyline going and weakens established character dynamics in the process.

Den of Geek, on the other hand, praised the episode's visual storytelling and highlighted its use of the Statue of Liberty as an effective symbol of Maggie's hope for rebuilding society.

Ahead of the new season, Jeffrey Dean Morgan also shared his thoughts on the evolving relationship between Negan and Maggie.

Speaking after a two-episode screening at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, the actor described season 3 as "their best season by far," while pointing to how dramatically the relationship between Negan and Maggie has evolved, according to Bleeding Cool.

Episode 3 trailer hints at new enemies

The trailer for episode 3, Emigrants, suggests Maggie's plans may begin falling apart almost immediately.

A large group of survivors arrives in Manhattan after seeing Maggie's beacon, but the preview indicates not everyone can be trusted. The newcomers appear to bring fresh tensions, while Negan teams up with Dillard and is seen taking hostages from rival groups as part of what looks like another attempt to maintain order.

The upcoming episode also appears set to deal with the aftermath of the Dama's death. If Maggie confirms Negan was responsible, their fragile partnership could once again be pushed to the breaking point.

Emily Kinney's Beth Greene return still to come

Even with the Dama's storyline now seemingly over, season 3 still has one of its biggest surprises waiting.

Emily Kinney is set to return as Beth Greene later this season in a standalone alternate reality episode imagining a version of the story where Beth never died in the original The Walking Dead. The unexpected episode is expected to be one of the season's biggest talking points.
