Thalapathy Vijay once dropped shocking truth about his marriage with Sangeetha: ‘I never went against…’

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and superstar Vijay is back in the news again as his wife, Sangeetha, withdrew her divorce petition before the Family Court near Chennai on Friday. As all eyes are on their troubled marriage, an old interview where the Ghilli actor claimed he tied the knot with Sangeetha as she was selected by his parents.

In a chat with CineStreet, the actor stated that it was not a love marriage and that he did not regret marrying the girl his parents chose for him.

“This wasn’t a love marriage. I never went against my parents for marriage. I married a woman my parents chose. I always tell my fans that choose a partner selected by your parents, life will be beautiful…” he said.


Vijay’s connection with Sangeetha Sornalingam started when she visited Chennai in the 1990s to see him while he was filming. What began as a meeting between a star and a fan gradually evolved into a deep friendship and eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. Vijay later presented Sangeetha to his parents, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shobha Chandrasekhar, who reportedly approved of their relationship and supported their union.

The couple officially registered their marriage in the United Kingdom in 1998. They then held a traditional wedding ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999. Vijay and Sangeetha are parents to two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Saasha. Both children have made brief appearances in a few of their father's films.

For more than 20 years, Sangeetha maintained a relatively private life and remained largely away from the media spotlight. However, that changed earlier this year after she approached the Chengalpattu Family Court in February and initiated divorce proceedings under the Special Marriage Act.

In her legal petition, Sangeetha reportedly alleged that Vijay had been involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. She stated that she became aware of the alleged relationship in 2021. According to her claims, although Vijay had reportedly assured her that the relationship would come to an end, she believed it continued. She further alleged that the situation subsequently resulted in emotional distance, dismissive behaviour and prolonged estrangement within their marriage, which she characterised as constructive desertion.
