Thalapathy Vijay and Jason Statham in one film? Actor-politician's son Jason Sanjay calls it a 'great collaboration' ahead of directorial debut

Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay's son, Jason Sanjay, is getting ready for the release of his first film as a director, Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan. As promotions for the film continue, Jason has been opening up about his journey into filmmaking, the choices that shaped his career, and one dream collaboration that has now caught fans' attention.

Speaking to Behindwoods TV in his first interview, Jason revealed that if Hollywood action star Jason Statham ever wanted to work with him, he already knows exactly which Tamil actor he would cast alongside him. His answer was immediate, and unsurprisingly, it involved his father, Vijay.

During the interview, the filmmaker was asked to imagine a situation where Jason Statham watched Sigma, liked the film and expressed interest in working with him. When asked which Tamil actor he would bring into that project, Jason did not hesitate. "My dad (Vijay). It will prove to be a great collaboration between the two."


He then laughed and joked that his answer would probably become meme material once people heard it. In another part of the conversation, Jason also said, "The first person who comes to my mind is my Appa (Thalapathy Vijay). It will be a great combination. Hope Jason Statham watches this."

His comments quickly drew attention among Vijay fans, many of whom welcomed the idea of seeing the Tamil superstar paired with the Hollywood action star on screen.

Why Jason Sanjay chose direction instead of acting

Despite growing up as the son of one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars, Jason said acting was never his goal. According to him, spending time on film sets from a young age made filmmaking feel like a natural career path.

"Since childhood, I had access to sets. That was my privilege. I had good exposure. I started to feel comfortable there. I normalised going to sets as part of my life. So, the interest sparked from there," he said.

Jason also revealed that cinema was not his first career choice.

"At first, I wanted to become a pilot. In between, I was also interested in becoming a cricketer. It was during Class 11 and 12 that I started showing an interest in cinema. In college, I wanted to pursue filmmaking," he shared.

He added that storytelling had always interested him more than performing in front of the camera.

"Since childhood, I loved storytelling—randomly narrating incidents to my friends. Slowly, I started scribbling down these ideas. Eventually, it became a hobby. I went to Canada to learn filmmaking. There, I understood what I wanted to do," Jason said.

Learning filmmaking in Canada

Jason credited his education in Canada for giving him practical experience and confidence as a filmmaker. He said his professors regularly sent students to advertising agencies where they worked on campaigns for startup companies.

"While learning there, our professor would send us to these ad agencies, where we helped make advertisements for startup companies. We practised our skills there. It gave me a lot of confidence," he said.

He also spoke about volunteering at the Toronto International Film Festival, saying the experience allowed him to watch a wide variety of films and understand different styles of filmmaking.

"I volunteered at the Toronto Film Festival many times and got the chance to watch all kinds of work. That was great exposure. That is how I started watching films. Around this time, I also met Nivin Pauly. His film Moothon was screened there. It was a great experience," he concluded.

The movie was originally scheduled to hit theatres on July 31, but reports suggest its release has been postponed. The makers are yet to announce a revised release date.
