Texas waitress spent seven years quietly serving her worst customer, who was rude, never left a tip. After his death, she got a surprise worth $50,000

Sometimes, gratitude is not always visible or obvious. People who we assume loathe us or think of us with contempt may actually appreciate us more than we think. An old story about a long-suffering waitress from Texas and her disgruntled customer has surfaced on X and has gone viral. Taking to X, a popular page, Historic Vids shared how waitress Melina Salazar spent seven years tending to every need of her worst customer, with a smile and patience that rivalled a saint.

Salazar was the only server at a Luby’s Cafeteria in Brownsville, Texas, who put up with Walter “Buck” Swords’s demands and curses.

According to an NBC Newsreport, the 89-year-old World War II veteran asked that his food be brought extremely hot, even when the temperature was so high that he occasionally burnt his mouth, and he regularly grumbled about his meals and shouted at staff. Swords never gave Salazar a tip, even though she was always patient and provided polite service.



After Swords passed away in 2007, everything was different. His estate attorney called Salazar and told her something she never would have expected. In his will, Swords had left the long-time waitress $50,000 in cash and his 2000 Buick in remembrance of her. According to reports, he gave Salazar the unexpected inheritance as a token of appreciation for his generosity, tolerance, and years of impeccable service.

In a chat with Harlingen television station KGBT-TV, Salazar said she was yet to believe her good fortune and admitted that Swords was “kind of mean".
