Small Habit That Changed Their Finances: Shah Rukh Khan follows one money rule he has refused to break since his difficult childhood

Before Shah Rukh Khan became one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, he knew what it meant to live without financial security. The actor has spoken openly about unpaid school fees, difficulty paying rent and his family’s struggle to afford treatment for his father. Through those years, however, one lesson from his mother stayed with him, that never depend on someone else for what you need.

In an interview with Taran Adarsh, Khan once recalled the advice his mother, Fatima, gave him, “Stretch yourself beyond what you have today, and grow enough to cover that stretch tomorrow. And never ask anyone for anything. Teach this to your children as well.”

For Khan, the advice became more than a childhood lesson. It shaped the way he approached money, work and eventually his enormous career.

The rule came from a past without financial security

Khan has described his early life as a period when money was often difficult to find. In a 2013 Filmfare interview, he recalled his parents collecting loose change from underneath mattresses to pay his school fees.

He also spoke about his father's illness and the family's inability to afford all the injections prescribed for his treatment. “I’m from a poor family. I’ve seen the worst,” Khan said.

There were also times when his family could not pay the rent and he recalled being thrown out of his house. “I’ve been on the roads twice,” he said.

Those experiences seem to have influenced his attitude towards financial dependence. Rather than viewing money as something that had to be constantly chased, Khan said he did not want his circumstances to determine his sense of self-worth.

‘Never ask anyone for anything’

The principle he attributed to his mother was simple, build yourself enough to meet your own needs rather than repeatedly asking others to provide for you.

That philosophy later became visible in Khan's professional life. As his acting career grew, he said he did not want to rely on people to give him opportunities.

“I don’t ask anyone for work. I invest my own money, make my own films, and I invest it happily,” Khan said.

SRK's comment reflected the same basic idea his mother had taught him years earlier. Instead of waiting for someone else to create an opportunity, Khan said he preferred to create one himself.

Even money did not become his only motivation

Khan's relationship with money was also shaped by an awareness of how easily it could influence decisions.

He recalled that after Deewana became a hit, a filmmaker offered him Rs 5 lakh. Having never seen that much money before, Khan took the money and ran home to his wife. Only later did he realise that he had become so focused on the amount that he had forgotten to ask about the film.

He returned the money and decided he would not accept a signing amount without first knowing what project he was committing to.

This incident was different from his mother's lesson about not asking others for anything, but it reflected the same bigger life approach that money should not be allowed to dictate every professional decision.

Khan has also said that his philosophy was something he wanted to pass on to his children.
