Should you withdraw a large Employees' Provident Fund balance and invest it in mutual funds for potentially higher returns? A Reddit post posing exactly this question has sparked discussion online, but according to Bengaluru-based Chartered Accountant Meenal Goel, many people are looking at the decision from the wrong perspective.

Sharing the post on social media, the CA argued that the debate is not simply about returns. Instead, it is about understanding the different roles that EPF and mutual funds play in a long-term financial plan.

The Reddit user's dilemma

A Reddit user shared that he is a 32-year-old professional with around nine years of continuous work experience. After taking a voluntary one-year career break, he expects to rejoin the workforce soon. He revealed that he currently has an EPF balance of around Rs 33.5 lakh and a mutual fund portfolio worth about Rs 50 lakh, delivering an XIRR of approximately 12.25% through SIP investments made since 2018.

The user also clarified that he has enough money in his savings account to comfortably cover six to eight months of expenses, meaning he does not need to withdraw either investment for immediate financial needs.

His question was straightforward: Should he withdraw his EPF before starting his next job and invest the amount in mutual funds instead?

Bengaluru CA says most people are asking the wrong question

Reacting to the Reddit discussion, Bengaluru CA Meenal Goel said the issue goes beyond comparing investment returns. She noted that the post was about a professional considering whether to move Rs 33.5 lakh from EPF into mutual funds. While many commenters focused on which option could generate better returns, she believes that approach misses the bigger picture.

According to her, EPF and mutual funds are designed for different purposes. She pointed out that India has over 7.3 crore contributing EPF members, while the EPF scheme currently offers an 8.25% annual interest rate. Instead of treating the decision as a simple race between returns, she said investors should recognise that one investment primarily aims to build wealth while the other helps protect it.

Why comparing returns alone may not be enough

Meenal Goel explained that one of the biggest investing mistakes is expecting every financial product to serve the same purpose. As she put it, the real mistake is not necessarily earning "a slightly lower return," but assuming every investment should perform the same role in a portfolio. Her advice suggests that wealth creation and financial stability can work together rather than compete with each other.

Her advice on withdrawing EPF

Offering her view on the Reddit user's question, Meenal Goel advised against withdrawing the entire EPF balance simply to chase higher returns. Instead, she recommended withdrawing only the portion of the money that is actually needed.

She suggested allowing the remaining EPF corpus to continue as the stable, tax-efficient part of the portfolio, while directing future savings towards mutual funds for long-term wealth creation.

For her, the discussion is less about choosing one investment over another and more about ensuring each asset performs the role it was designed for.
