Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless review: Built to last, priced to argue

Sennheiser took nearly four years to follow up the Momentum 4 Wireless. In that time Sony shipped two generations of its 1000X line, Bose refreshed the QuietComfort Ultra, and Apple got round to an AirPods Max 2. So the Momentum 5 Wireless arrives with a lot to prove, and the most interesting thing about it has nothing to do with sound.

It is the battery. For the first time in this line, you can swap it out yourself. In a category where Rs 40,000 headphones quietly become Rs 40,000 paperweights once the cell degrades after three or four years, that is a bigger statement than any tuning tweak. The question for Indian buyers is whether that longevity pitch survives a price that looks less aggressive here than it does abroad.

Price and Availability

The Momentum 5 Wireless is priced at Rs 39,990 in India, in Black and Denim. Pre-orders opened on September 24 through Sennheiser's website, major online platforms and offline retail, and open sales begin on October 1. Pre-order buyers get a BTD 600 Bluetooth USB dongle, worth Rs 5,990, at no extra cost.

Design

The Momentum 5 keeps the large oval earcups that define recent Sennheiser over-ears, but it looks better than its predecessor. A fabric-wrapped headband, especially on the Denim finish, gives it a more premium, less clinical look.

Up close, the earcups are the weak point: they are mostly matte plastic and feel a notch below the price tag. The cups swivel flat but do not fold inward, so the case is bulkier than Sony's or Bose's. At 290g, it is also heavier than the 254g XM6. For context they are lighter than the AirPods Max. That said, clamping force is well judged and comfort holds up over long sessions, with some ear warmth after the first hour.

Touch controls remain a Sennheiser strength. The large cup surfaces make swipes for volume and track skipping easy to land, and they respond quickly. The earpads, like the battery, are user-replaceable.

Software

Everything runs through the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, which is stable and easy to navigate. You get an eight-band custom EQ, adjustable noise cancellation levels, and a toggle for Dolby Atmos with head tracking.

Connectivity is comprehensive. The headphones run Bluetooth 5.4, with Bluetooth 6.0 and LE Audio promised via a firmware update. Codec support covers SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless through Snapdragon Sound, and multipoint lets you pair a phone and laptop at once. There is no LDAC, which matters if you are on a non-Snapdragon Android phone chasing high-res wireless audio. For wired listening, both 3.5mm and USB-C are supported, the latter handling up to 24-bit/96kHz.

Performance and Battery

Sound

Inside are 42mm drivers inspired by Sennheiser's HD 600 series and built at its Tullamore, Ireland facility. The transducer is carried over from the Momentum 4, with revised tuning. The result leans rich and warm. Bass is fuller than before, and some listeners will find it heavier than they want out of the box; the EQ fixes that quickly. The midrange is the standout, with vocals sounding natural and textured in a way that competes with pricier rivals. The Sony has more drive and urgency on rhythm-heavy tracks, while the Sennheiser is more relaxed and fatigue-free. Plug in via USB-C and the presentation gains noticeable depth.

Noise cancellation

Sennheiser doubled the microphone count to eight, four per earcup, and claims three times better midrange noise cancellation than the Momentum 4. The improvement is real, especially with human voices, which makes a difference in open offices and metro coaches. But it still softens noise rather than erasing it. Sony and Bose remain ahead on outright ANC strength.

Calls

This is where the Momentum 5 quietly beats the competition. Wind and traffic are suppressed well, and voices come through clear and natural. For anyone taking calls on the move, it is among the best in the class.

Battery

Sennheiser claims up to 57 hours with ANC on, three hours less than the Momentum 4 but still close to double what the Sony and Bose flagships offer. Fast charging is supported. Then there is the replaceable battery. Sennheiser has a track record here: it still officially supports its original 2018 Momentum True Wireless earbuds. If that commitment extends to battery availability in India, this is a pair you could reasonably keep for the better part of a decade.

Verdict

The Momentum 5 Wireless is the best over-ear headphone Sennheiser has made in this line. It sounds rich and refined, takes excellent calls, runs for days on a charge, and is designed to be repaired rather than replaced. Its weaknesses are real but modest: ANC that trails Sony and Bose, plasticky earcups, and a case that does not fold down.

The bigger issue is Indian pricing. Abroad, the Momentum 5 is the value pick. Here, at Rs 39,990, it lines up against a Sony XM6 that sells for less at street prices. If ANC is your priority, the Sony still makes more sense. If you care about sound, calls, battery life and a pair that will outlast its warranty, the Sennheiser is the more thoughtful buy, and the one more likely to still be working in 2031.
