How Jean Grey enters Peter Parker's story

The film introduces Jean as a mysterious figure whose psychic abilities cause chaos across New York. Peter Parker begins investigating after a Department of Damage Control facility comes under attack.

Jean later breaks into Peter's apartment, reads the letter he had written to MJ and warns him to stop chasing her. At one point, she even takes control of MJ's mind, making Peter briefly believe that MJ has remembered him before revealing it was only an illusion.

As Peter continues investigating, he eventually discovers her identity as Jean Elaine Grey.

Unlike the comics, Brand New Day gives Jean a different origin story. The film reveals that she and her sister Sara were abandoned as children before becoming targets of the Department of Damage Control. Jean still possesses powerful psychic abilities, but the movie slightly changes how they work. Instead of relying only on traditional telepathy and telekinesis, she can psychically enter and temporarily control other people's bodies, allowing her to manipulate events around her.

Although this is different from the comic version, the powers remain closely connected to Jean Grey's established psychic abilities.

The film also portrays her as a conflicted antagonist rather than a straightforward villain.

During the Los Angeles premiere, musician Steve Lacy, whose music appears in the film, appeared to hint at the reveal before the release. Asked which character stood out to him, he replied, "Jean... I like Jean. She's the villain, but there's a reason to her madness."

Film critic Siddhant Adlakha later downplayed the significance of the reveal, writing on X, "Apparently someone 'spoiled' this on the red carpet tonight. Don't worry, it's not a spoiler, I promise. Just a normal part of the film. But I'm forced to be vague because the studio is marketing it as a major twist, when anyone who could possibly care has already figured it out."

He added, "Definitely wouldn't call it a mystery - it's not a piece of information anyone's chasing, and learning it makes no difference to anyone or anything in the film. If anything, the mystery involves motive, not 'this is someone you recognise from the comics/other films.'"

Jean Grey has long been one of Marvel Comics' most important mutants, known for her telepathic and telekinetic abilities and her connection to the Phoenix Force.
