For many vehicle owners, washing a car is a routine chore. Yet few realise that a single conventional wash can consume 20–25 litres of water, causing everyday water wastage. As concerns over depleting groundwater and sustainability continue to grow, innovative alternatives are beginning to reshape the industry. One such solution has come from Pune-based MBA dropout Nitin Sharma, who replaced traditional car washes with a 100% waterless cleaning method. Today, his eco-friendly venture saves nearly 12 lakh litres of water every day while generating an impressive Rs 4 crore in annual revenue, proving that sustainability can become a profitable business.

A bold bet on waterless innovation

Nitin Sharma, the founder of GoWaterless, has made the impossible possible. He dropped out from his MBA in 2004 and took over his family’s car-washing business in Pune, as per a report by StartupPedia. But reality hit him in 2016 when groundwater hit rock bottom, wells dried up and India grappled with a severe water crisis.

Driven by this newfound purpose, Nitin assembled a dream team in 2017. He wanted to go water-free for car washes. But the road was not easy. He invested Rs 10 lakhs while his wife gave away almost all of her savings and even mortgaged her jewellery. Despite his family raising questions about the decision, Nitin was determined to find an alternative solution.

From Rs 10 lakh to Rs 10 crore

Nitin devoted 2 challenging years to research and testing, noting what worked and what didn’t, creating as many as 600 formulas, as per a report by The Better India. Finally, in 2019, his hard work paid off. Nitin was able to create a plant-based cleaner that was anti-corrosive, disinfecting and left no streaks. The magical potion is a blend of organic extracts from 5 different plant species. Each extract played a specific role – cleaning, protecting the car's delicate paint, and even guarding against harmful UV rays.

Nitin’s 100% waterless method replaces the 25 litres of water used in traditional car washes. In terms of personal wins, his modest Rs 10 lakh investment has now grown to Rs 10 crore in just 5 years. At present, there are more than 200 GoWaterless franchises in 22 states in India, each one saving precious water and offering a convenient doorstep service. But in his heart, Nitin’s true mission is clear — reduce water wastage, one car at a time.
