Rani Mukerji’s mother, Krishna, passes away at 75. Bunty Aur Babli star once credited her success to her: ‘My mum decided…’

Veteran actress Rani Mukerji has been hit with a humongous personal loss. Her mother, Krishna Mukerji, has passed away. She was 75. The family made a public statement, confirming the news of her demise on Tuesday. "With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon,” they said in the statement. The family also requested privacy for mourning and coming to terms with the loss.

Rani had a close bond with her mother Krishna. In an interview with the Deccan Chronicle, she revealed it was her mother who told her to become an actress, and she obeyed her. My mother decided that (my career) for me. When we were young, it was a different generation, so I was obedient. Whatever my mother said, I did — unlike today,” the actress said, continuing, “My mum said ‘become an actor', so I became an actor. I believe she realised my dream before me. I became an actor by default. Today when I look back, I don’t think I could be anything else but an actor.”

Her mother, although protective, refused to mollycoddle her. In a chat with ANI in 2025, the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai star said her mother was so unimpressed with her performance in her debut film, Raja Ki Aayegi Barat, that she personally told the producer to drop her from the film.


"For my mother, it was like, 'You do it and see how it goes.' But after my first screen test, she found me so bad that she told the producer, 'I think you'll ruin your film by taking my daughter. You'll face losses. You shouldn't take her'" she said.

"Because the producer was very keen to sign me, Salim uncle (the producer of Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat)... But my mom was smart enough to understand that I wasn't doing a good job. So she was like, 'I don't think you should take her,'" she added.

When Rani was honoured with a National Award for Best Actress for the 2023 film Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, her mother admitted that although she was proud the award had come a tad bit too late. In a conversation with the press at a Durga Puja event in Mumbai,, she said: “I am delighted she received a National Award, but it was overdue. She ought to have been honoured for Black. Nonetheless, I am incredibly proud of her today.”

Krishna was a former playback singer. As per The Trinune, she lent her voice to songs from films such as Haiwan, Teesri Aankh, Momer Alo, etc. She was married to film director Ram Mukherjee, who breathed his last in 2017.
