Finishing a workout is only half the job. What you do in the hours that follow can determine whether your body grows stronger or is left battling fatigue, stiffness and prolonged muscle soreness. While many people focus on lifting heavier weights or pushing through intense cardio sessions, recovery often takes a back seat despite being just as important for performance and overall fitness. Supporting the body with the right nutrients, hydration and adequate rest can help repair muscles and prepare them for the next workout. In her latest Instagram post, Delhi nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared 4 simple, science-backed recovery strategies that can help your body bounce back faster.

Boost blood flow with beetroot

One of Lovneet Batra's top recommendations for faster recovery is beetroot, a natural source of dietary nitrates. Once consumed, these nitrates are converted into nitric oxide in the body, which helps widen blood vessels and improve circulation. Better blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients reach fatigued muscles, supporting faster repair and reducing post-workout exhaustion. Several studies have also shown that beetroot juice may improve exercise performance and recovery by enhancing oxygen delivery and reducing muscle fatigue. Including fresh beetroot or beetroot juice after training can therefore be a simple addition to your recovery routine.

Prioritise protein within 2 hours

Exercise creates tiny tears in muscle fibres that require protein to rebuild and grow stronger. Lovneet Batra advises consuming 20–30 grams of protein within one to two hours after a workout, when muscles are especially responsive to nutrients. Good options include one scoop of whey protein, 200 grams of Greek yoghurt or 150 grams of low-fat paneer. According to the International Society of Sports Nutrition, consuming high-quality protein after exercise stimulates muscle protein synthesis, supports muscle repair and may reduce soreness, helping the body recover more efficiently.

Replenish essential minerals

Sweating during exercise causes the body to lose important electrolytes and minerals that are crucial for muscle function. Lovneet highlights potassium and magnesium as two nutrients that deserve special attention after a workout. Potassium, found in bananas and coconut water, helps maintain fluid balance and supports normal muscle contractions while reducing fatigue. Magnesium, abundant in pumpkin seeds and almonds, plays an important role in muscle relaxation and energy production, helping prevent cramps and muscle tightness. Replacing these nutrients after exercise supports both hydration and overall recovery.

Don't underestimate quality sleep

Nutrition alone cannot maximise recovery if sleep is compromised. Lovneet stresses the importance of getting seven to eight hours of quality sleep, as this is when the body carries out much of its repair work. During deep sleep, the body naturally releases growth hormone, which helps rebuild muscle tissue damaged during exercise. Sleep also supports immune function, restores energy levels and prepares the body for future workouts. As an added tip, Lovneet recommends pairing your post-workout protein with a fast-digesting carbohydrate such as a banana. This combination helps replenish depleted glycogen stores more quickly, providing muscles with the energy they need to recover and perform better in the next training session.
