One thing Indian students do exceptionally well is get high grades! According to a WUSF report, an Indian origin student created history Vaibhav Bhaskar, a student of Steinbrenner High School in Florida graduated as a valedictorian with an extraordinary weighted GPA of 11.99. Actor Madhavan recently hailed Vaibhav on his Instagram Stories.

In a chat with WUSF, Vaibhav revealed how he got the historic GPA, breaking the record of the previous Hillsborough County record from 2022 of 11.84.

Record-Breaking GPA Achieved Under Previous Grading Formula

The student from Lutz belonged to the final graduating class eligible to earn such an exceptionally high grade point average under the earlier evaluation system used by Hillsborough County Public Schools. Beginning with students who entered ninth grade in 2023, the district introduced a revised GPA calculation method, as outlined on its official website. Since the Class of 2026 remained under the previous policy, they were assessed using the older formula.


School officials explained that the former system assigned substantial weight to Advanced Placement and other rigorous academic courses, allowing students to accumulate remarkably high GPAs. The updated calculation model introduces a standardized approach and places an upper limit on GPA values, ensuring that future graduates will no longer be able to reach figures comparable to Bhaskar's achievement.

Aiming to Break the Existing Record

Bhaskar revealed that discovering the previous district record of 11.84 inspired him to set an ambitious personal target. Surpassing that milestone gradually became one of his biggest motivations throughout high school.

He reflected that goals are often shaped by the limits people assume for themselves. According to him, if the previous benchmark had been even higher, he would still have challenged himself to exceed it. In his view, personal aspirations should never be restricted by perceived boundaries because determination can make extraordinary accomplishments possible.

Rigorous Academic Schedule

To accomplish his objective, Bhaskar completed an exceptionally demanding academic program. During his four years in high school, he successfully finished 20 Advanced Placement courses. Alongside those classes, he also enrolled in 24 dual-enrollment courses offered through Hillsborough College and the University of Florida, allowing him to earn college-level credits while still in school.

Success Built on Balance

Despite his remarkable academic accomplishments, Bhaskar emphasized that his life was not centered solely around studying. He insisted that maintaining balance was one of the most important factors behind his success.

Rather than viewing his GPA as the ultimate goal, he considered it a natural outcome of consistent discipline and dedication. Outside the classroom, he actively participated in nonprofit organizations and demonstrated strong leadership skills. Driven by his interest in finance and economics, he established an investment club at his school. He also served as president of the South Asian Student Association and captained the school's mock trial team.

Bhaskar described himself as an ordinary teenager who simply enjoyed challenging himself academically. He believed that stepping outside his comfort zone and embracing demanding courses ultimately helped him achieve exceptional results.

Family Encouragement Without Pressure

His father, Bhaskar Malayappan, credited his son's accomplishments to self-motivation rather than parental pressure. He explained that the family focused on creating the right environment and providing opportunities instead of forcing academic decisions. Comparing their role to laying railway tracks, he said they built the foundation while allowing their son to determine his own direction and pace without interference.

Looking Ahead to Duke University

After graduating, Bhaskar plans to continue his education at Duke University, where he intends to pursue a double major in economics and public policy. He selected the university because of its highly regarded academic programs as well as its vibrant athletic culture, both of which strongly appealed to him.
