Take care of cats and stay for free
Animal welfare organization Syros Cats, which was established in the 1990s, has been welcoming volunteers to take care of their rescued cats. As per the official website, their only criteria are that the individual must be ‘fit, mature, healthy and independent’, who is willing to spend at least a month on the island.
In exchange, the organisation will be offering free accommodation, breakfast and basic utilities like electricity and WiFi to the willing volunteers. You would get a private bedroom and will be sharing the kitchen, bathroom and communal living space with 2-3 other volunteers. Your job will be taking care of the adorable felines for only 5 hours a day (from 8 am to 1 pm), 5 days a week.
Basic tasks and more about the Greek island
The basic tasks you need to carry out include feeding the animals, cleaning their shelters and cages, cuddling and socialising with cats or kittens, preparing them for adoption, assisting with basic medical care and supporting spay and neuter programs. Volunteers should also take the cats to vets, refill their water bowls, and maintain the gardens. You should be over 25 to apply for the programme. Although volunteer applications for 2026 are now closed, applications for 2027 will open in September 2026, as per the information provided on their website.
