Johnny Depp's unusual love story with a 41-acre Kentucky estate: Sold for $1 million, bought back for $2 million and again sold for $1.36 million

Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s connection with a 41-acre horse farm in Kentucky has been from a straightforward real estate investment. The actor first bought the Lexington-area property in 1995, sold it for about $1 million six years later, then once again he returned to buy it out for $2 million. But this was not the end of it because after Depp's mother lived there until her death in 2016, the estate eventually one more time changed hands in 2020 for around $1.35 million.

The unusual history that the property had already attracted attention when Depp attempted to sell it through an auction in 2017. According to the Associated Press, the 41-acre estate had been listed for $2.9 million, but the auction failed to produce a sale after the highest bid reached only $1.4 million.

Why Johnny Depp bought the Kentucky property twice

Depp, who was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, purchased the horse farm in 1995 for $950,000, according to Country Living, citing People.


The actor sold the property in 2001 for $1 million and that might have seemed to mark the end of his connection with the estate but four years later he bought it again, this time for $2 million.

Hello! Magazine reported in 2022 that the second purchase was made for Depp’s mother, Betty Sue. She lived at the property until her death in May 2016.

Country Living also noted that Depp was particularly close to his mother. He had her name tattooed on his arm and took her to major Hollywood events, including the Academy Awards when he received his first nomination in 2004.

What was inside the 41-acre estate?

The Kentucky property was more than just a large house. It was an extensive horse farm with multiple buildings and facilities.

The estate included a main residence of roughly 6,000 square feet, a separate guesthouse, horse barns, paddocks and a four-car garage. Country Living described the main house as having six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, while the Associated Press reported seven bedrooms.

The property was located at 5493 Versailles Road outside Lexington and there was also an outdoor pool along with a sunroom.

2017 auction did not go as planned

After Betty Sue’s death, the property was put back on the market. In December 2016, it was listed for $2.9 million, according to Country Living.

By September 2017, the estate was headed for auction. The Associated Press reported that 14 bidders had registered, but the auction struggled to gain momentum.

An auctioneer suggested opening at $2.5 million, but there was no interest at that level. Bidding eventually started at $1 million and rose to $1.4 million.

That amount was still far below the $2.9 million asking price. After consulting with Depp’s business manager Edward White, the auctioneers ended the proceedings without a sale. The Halfhill Auction Group and White said discussions with interested buyers would continue.

Estate was eventually sold at a loss

The property remained connected to Depp for several more years before finally being sold in 2020.

The final transaction therefore capped an unusual chapter in Depp’s real estate history: a $950,000 purchase in 1995, a $1 million sale in 2001, a $2 million repurchase in 2005 and, years later, a sale for roughly $1.35 million.

What began as a Kentucky property Depp bought during the early part of his Hollywood career ultimately became a home associated with his mother and an estate whose journey through the property market took considerably longer and more twists than a typical celebrity real estate deal.
