But one of the most interesting features of her garden is hidden beneath the surface. Garner uses a greywater recycling system to irrigate parts of her backyard, including her miniature orchard. During a garden and home tour with Architectural Digest, Garner explained how the system works. Wastewater from sources including her washing machine, dishwasher and shower is collected in a large tank, filtered and then directed towards plants that can benefit from it.

She described it as a “big tank” that collects water and filters it before watering specific areas of the garden.

For Garner, the system is partly about adapting to California's water challenges. The actress has spoken about not wanting to use more than her share of the available water, making greywater recycling a practical choice for her garden.

Instead of allowing suitable household wastewater to simply disappear down the drain, the system gives some of that water another purpose. The recycled water is specifically routed to plants that can tolerate and benefit from it, including Garner's fruit trees and blueberry bushes.

She also explained that greywater contains phosphorus, which can benefit fruit trees. Garner said there is “a lot of phosphorous in grey water” and that fruit trees “thrive on it.”

That makes the system particularly useful for her orchard, where the recycled water is directed rather than distributed indiscriminately throughout the garden.

The garden's appeal goes beyond sustainability. As reported by People, Garner said the space was inspired by fond memories of her childhood in West Virginia.
