Gen Z Employee Denied Working From Home, Uses Same Rule To Ignore 10 PM Client Call

Gen Z professionals are the no-nonsense generation when it comes to work. Unlike their millennial predecessors, Gen Z are refusing to compromise on their autonomy and dignity and establishing boundaries. A post on how a Gen Z employee outsmarted the HR officer when he was denied a work-from-home policy has gone viral on X.

The employee asked HR if he might work from home the next day because he had some personal obligations in the afternoon, according to the widely shared anecdote. According to reports, HR turned down the request, citing business policies that prohibited remote employment.

The ruling was neither contested or contested by the employe. Rather, he accepted the response and showed up for work the following day as normal.

A few days later, HR got in touch with the worker regarding a significant client who had tried to get in touch with him at around ten o'clock at night. Both the call and a follow-up message had gone unanswered by the employee. HR asked him why he hadn't been available.

The worker then cited the same corporate policy that had previously rejected his request to work remotely. He essentially applied the same logic to his availability outside of business hours because the organisation's policy obliged him to work from the office.

On X, the story soon acquired popularity, with many users praising the employee's strategy. One individual commended the young professional for having the self-assurance to stick to his interpretation of working regulations, contending that when businesses rigorously implement office-based laws, employees shouldn't be expected to be reachable after hours.

Another user brought attention to the generational divide, speculating that even late at night, a millennial employee might have taken the client's call. Another commenter quipped: “It’s a two way street…”
