Kim Ji-won is back. The popular actress is all set to return to television with a completely different avatar in Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia. The actress, who was last seen in the hit drama Queen of Tears, will play a brilliant surgeon who takes on a powerful and corruption-ridden medical establishment. The upcoming series combines medical drama with noir elements and promises a darker role for the actress.

Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia will premiere on October 9, 2026, and will be available to stream on Netflix from the same day as its Korean broadcast. The SBS Friday-Saturday drama will air at 9:50 p.m. KST, while the series will stream globally on Netflix. The drama has 12 episodes and will release weekly on Fridays and Saturdays.

Doctor X: What is Kim Ji-won's new K-drama about?

The Korean drama is based on the popular Japanese medical series Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon. The story follows Gye Su-jeong, a highly skilled surgeon who refuses to be controlled by the rules and power structures surrounding the medical profession.




Su-jeong is introduced through a doctor-placement agency and is sent to Guseo University Hospital to fill a vacancy in its surgical department. However, her arrival is far from routine. She soon finds herself dealing with a hospital where powerful people and established interests have a strong influence.



Instead of quietly accepting the system, Su-jeong uses her exceptional surgical abilities to challenge the problems around her. She earns the nickname “mad dog of the operating room” because of her fearless approach and refusal to compromise when it comes to her work. SBS describes the series as a medical noir centred on a surgeon who confronts systemic corruption through her skills.

Kim Ji-won plays a dark hero

The upcoming drama gives Kim Ji-won a role that is very different from her recent romantic characters. As Gye Su-jeong, she plays a confident and highly capable surgeon who does not depend on status or connections to prove herself.

The recently released poster captures the darker side of her character. Kim Ji-won is seen staring directly at the camera with a serious expression, while her hands and white doctor's coat are covered in blood. The image hints at the intense medical cases and confrontations that await her inside the hospital.

The makers have described Su-jeong as a medical dark hero who will take on Guseo University Hospital's so-called “white mafia”. Her battle is not only about performing difficult surgeries but also about challenging the powerful people controlling the institution.

Kim Ji-won is returning to television after a two-year gap following Queen of Tears. Speaking about the character, she said the contrast between Su-jeong's outward appearance and the different sides of her personality that emerge over time attracted her to the role.

Who stars in Doctor X: Mafia in White?

Alongside Kim Ji-won, the drama features a strong supporting cast. Lee Jung-eun plays Jang Hui-suk, the head of the doctor-placement agency that brings Su-jeong into the hospital. Her character is a sharp and money-minded strategist who operates behind the scenes.

Son Hyun-joo plays Bu Seung-gwon, the director of Guseo University Hospital. His character becomes an important part of Su-jeong's confrontation with the hospital's existing power structure.

Kim Woo-seok plays Park Tae-gyeong, an intern from a privileged background. His character develops a mentor-mentee relationship with Su-jeong, adding another dimension to the story.

The series is directed by Lee Jung-rim and written by Pyeon Seung-geun. It is produced by Studio S, Studio Dragon and HighZium Studio.
