Although today he is married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, once Abhishek Bachchan was engaged to Karisma Kapoor, although they didn’t end up marrying. In an interview with Hindi Rush, director Suneel Darshan said he was at Kapoor’s home when her engagement with Bachchan Jr was called off.

He revealed the pair fell for each other before they were casted in the 2001 family drama Ek Rishtaa: The Bond Of Love. However, they eventually feature as a pair in the movie. “By the time I planned Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, it had already been decided that they would get married. They were an attractive pair - Amitabh Bachchan's son and Raj Kapoor's granddaughter. Ironically, the only film they were destined to do together was Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya,” he revealed.

He explained that the incident of their engagement being called off was “unfortunate,” and said that the ‘Raja Hindustani’ star underwent a lot of emotional turmoil. Then she went to Bangkok to celebrate New Year, and one fine day, she revealed she was going to marry billionaire Sunjay Kapur.


He refused to blame anyone for their doomed romance and did not reveal details as to why the engagement was dissolved.

“People blame Babita ji, Jaya ji, Karisma or Abhishek, but I think these things should be left to destiny. They had a fiery relationship. Love manifests differently for different couples, and every relationship has its own dynamic. There were a lot of disagreements between the two,” he said.

The duo got engaged in 2002, and the engagement was called off next year. The actress married Kapur, the chairman of Sona Comstar, an automotive component manufacturer, that same year. The duo had two kids, a daughter Samaira and a son Kiaan. The pair divorced in 2016. Kapur passed away on June 2025 when he collapsed during a polo match in England after being stung by a bee. He was 53.
