Billionaire Anil Aggarwal decodes a 3-part success formula using UNO card game. 'It explained life in a new way'

Billionaire businessman Anil Agarwal recently found an unexpected way to think about success through a game of UNO. The Vedanta chairman said a young member of his team recently introduced him to the Uno, and what began as a simple game turned into a lesson about how to deal with obstacles, change direction and recognise one's own strengths.

Agarwal shared his reflections in a post on X, saying UNO “explained life in a new way”. He connected three cards, Skip, Reverse and Wild, with three ways of approaching situations in life.

Skip Card: Not every obstacle needs your attention

For Agarwal, the Skip Card acts as a reminder that people do not have to respond to every obstacle or argument they encounter.


He said the card made him think about the importance of letting go. Instead of spending energy on every disagreement or difficulty, some situations may be better ignored so that life can continue moving forward.

“The Skip Card reminded me that not every obstacle or argument deserves your energy,” Agarwal wrote.

The lesson is less about avoiding every difficult situation and more about being selective about where to put one's attention. In his interpretation of the game, knowing what to leave behind can be as important as deciding what to pursue.

Reverse Card: Change direction when needed

The second lesson came from UNO's Reverse Card.

Agarwal linked it to situations where things are not progressing in the desired direction. Rather than continuing along the same path, he said it is possible to change course.

“The Reverse Card felt like proof that when life is not moving in your direction, you can still change its course,” he wrote.

For him, this could come down to one decisive move. “Sometimes, one strong decision is enough to turn the situation around,” Agarwal added.

The idea presents success not as a straight journey but as something that can involve changing direction when circumstances demand it.

Wild Card: Find what makes you different

The third card, and the one Agarwal called the best of the three, was the Wild Card.

He connected it with an individual's unique quality, strength or talent. His message was that people should identify the ability that distinguishes them from others and learn how to use it effectively.

“And the best of them all - the Wild Card,” Agarwal wrote. “I believe each of us has a wild card in life. A quality, a strength, or a gift that makes us different from everyone else.”


According to Agarwal, recognising that personal strength is only the first step. The important part is knowing when and how to use it.

“If you learn to recognise it and use it at the right time, it can take you a very long way,” he wrote.

Agarwal's larger lesson on success

The three UNO cards ultimately formed Agarwal's broader formula: know what deserves your energy, be willing to change direction and identify the quality that gives you an individual advantage.

He also connected these small decisions with the way progress develops over time.

“Life works much the same way. When we make thoughtful moves and turn small opportunities into momentum, success gradually is closer to us,” Agarwal wrote.

Rather than presenting success as one dramatic breakthrough, his UNO analogy focuses on a series of choices, skipping some battles, reversing course when necessary and making the most of one's distinctive strengths.

Agarwal ended the post by turning the question towards his followers, asking them to think about their own “wild card”, the quality or gift that makes them uniquely themselves.
