Avocados have become increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers thanks to their creamy texture and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in heart-healthy fats, fibre, potassium and antioxidants, they can be used to prepare everything from guacamole, salads and sandwiches to smoothies, sushi rolls and avocado toast. However, finding fresh, high-quality avocados in India remains a challenge, often leaving buyers disappointed. Frustrated by the lack of good produce, Bengaluru entrepreneur Akkshye Tulsyan decided to grow an avocado tree at home. What began as a quest for better fruit eventually turned into a powerful lesson on patience, perseverance and trusting the process.

From imported saplings to homegrown harvest

In the post, Tulsyan explained that his decision to cultivate avocados at home stemmed from repeated disappointment with the poor-quality fruit available in Bengaluru. Instead of settling for inferior produce, he chose to grow Hass avocados, a globally renowned variety celebrated for its rich flavour and creamy texture. To make this possible, he sourced saplings from California, where the variety is widely cultivated.


The Bengaluru entrepreneur described the experience as far more than a gardening project. According to him, growing an avocado tree requires unwavering patience, as the tiny saplings show little visible progress during the initial years. Regular watering, ensuring adequate sunlight and caring for what appears to be nothing more than a thin stem can often make growers question whether their efforts are paying off.

The patience behind every avocado harvest

Unlike today's culture of expecting instant results, Tulsyan noted that the process encourages people to slow down and trust the unseen growth taking place beneath the soil. Over time, however, the transformation becomes evident. The once-fragile sapling gradually develops into a sturdy tree, its branches spread into a lush canopy, flowers begin to bloom and eventually fresh avocados appear.


Tulsyan said the same tree that once tested his patience continues to reward him with fruit season after season, leaving him with a lasting reminder that consistently investing in strong foundations eventually brings meaningful results.
