Awarapan 2 trailer review: Netizens hail Emraan Hashmi's 'solid' screen presence. Film gets U/A 16+ rating after CBFC edits

Nearly two decades after Awarapan won audiences over, Emraan Hashmi is back as Shivam Pandit in Awarapan 2. The makers unveiled the film's trailer on August 6, offering a glimpse into a darker chapter of Shivam's life. The sequel reunites viewers with the troubled protagonist as he returns to face unresolved wounds from his past. However, the trailer kept most of the story under wraps.

Joining Emraan Hashmi in the sequel is Disha Patani, who plays Zara, while veteran actor Shabana Azmi essays the role of Nafisa. The supporting cast also includes Puran Gabbi as Zorawar, Anirudh Rawal as Sikandar, Surendar Vicky as Jaideep, Vijayant Kohli as Mehmood and Atul Kumar as Samarth.

Emraan Hashmi returns as Shivam Pandit

The trailer introduces an older and more battle-scarred Shivam Pandit, who is still haunted by his past. Instead of revealing major plot points, the makers have chosen to focus on the emotional weight carried by the protagonist, along with high-octane action sequences and the franchise's signature music.


The clip hints at a story driven by revenge and redemption while preserving the emotional tone that made the first film memorable. Disha Patani's character has also been kept largely mysterious.

The trailer has received a largely positive response on social media, with many viewers praising Emraan Hashmi's return and appreciating that the makers chose not to reveal too much of the story.

One user wrote, "Emraan Hashmi Screen Presence. This is how the trailer should be: short and not revealing too much. Excited for this movie, can't wait."




Another fan commented that the film looks visually appealing and said they were unsure whether the makers were holding back or saving the biggest moments for theatres. They added that Emraan once again looked every bit the leading man.

Many viewers also called the trailer a "solid" comeback for the franchise, saying it increased their excitement for the film.

Several fans praised the decision to keep the storyline hidden, saying the suspense and twists would be more enjoyable in theatres. Others highlighted the nostalgic background score, emotional connection, strong production values and action sequences as the trailer's biggest strengths. Disha Patani's mysterious role and Shabana Azmi's presence also generated interest among viewers.

A few users, however, felt the trailer was too short and wished it had revealed a little more, even though many believed the brief runtime was an intentional creative choice.

CBFC grants U/A 16+ certificate

Ahead of its release, Awarapan 2 has also completed the certification process with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). According to reports, the film has been awarded a U/A 16+ certificate, making it one of the few major Hindi releases this month to avoid receiving an 'A' certificate.

The certification reportedly came with several modifications. The CBFC asked the makers to add disclaimers related to drug use and child trafficking. An anti-drug ticker has also reportedly been directed to appear during scenes depicting drug consumption. Additionally, the film's title has been asked to appear in Hindi, in line with existing certification guidelines.

The board also instructed the makers to replace certain objectionable words in both the audio and subtitles.

The CBFC reportedly directed the makers to tone down several violent scenes. A second-half sequence was shortened significantly, while three scenes featuring extreme violence were trimmed. A scene showing drug snorting was also removed.

Following these edits, the film received its censor certificate on August 5 with a final approved runtime of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds (140 minutes and 20 seconds). Reports suggest the CBFC ordered around four minutes of deletions along with a few additional replacements before granting certification.

Directed as the sequel to the 2007 cult film, Awarapan 2 is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 14. The film will clash at the box office with Batwara 1947. Stay tuned!
