Robert Downey Jr is back in MCU this time as Dr Doom
The Avengers: Doomsday teaser is finally out. Marvel Studios dropped the much-anticipated sneak peek during Game 1 of the World Series. The teaser revealed Pedro Pascal back as Mr Fanastic, Chris Evans's return as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Anthony Mackie’s Captain America also made an appearance. However, it is Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr’s return as Doctor Doom which fans are waiting for, with bated breath. Who is this enigmatic and rather deadly Marvel villain?

Who Is Dr Doom?

Created by Stan Lee and artist Jack Krby, Dr Doom made his debut in Fantastic Four #5 in 1962. Doctor Doom is a self-proclaimed title of Victor Werner von Doom, the monarch of the fictional European country of Latveria. As he is the son of a Latverian healer and a Romani witch, Doom has gained mastery over both science and witchcraft. Unlike many villains, Doom believes in imposing order and saving the world from chaos. He intends to conquer the world, bring humanity to order and also prove his superiority over Mister Fantastic, or Dr Reed Richards, his old college rival and leader of the superhero group The Fantastic Four. Doom nurses a grudge against Dr Richards as he blames him for a laboratory incident that left him disfigured. He wears a meta mask to conceal his scarred visage and a magically forged suit of armour that empowers him with superhuman strength and powers of flight.

The character is recognised as one of Marvel's most significant iconic villains and ranks among the greatest comic book villains ever devised. He has been recognised as one of the most prominent Romani characters in popular superhero comics. Doom's fame has been showcased through merchandise like apparel and collectibles and has been transformed into different media forms, including movies, TV shows, and video games.

In the teaser, he is seen saying, "You are all living stolen lives,” indicating he has a personal score to settle against the Avengers.

Marvel announced Downey’s casting as Dr Doom in 2024, confirming he would return to the MCU in this new role rather than as Tony Stark or Iron Man.

Avengers Doomsday will hit the big screens on 18 December.
