IndiGo's next chapter: Rahul Bhatia backs Willie Walsh to lead expansion

IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia has said incoming chief executive Willie Walsh is driven by a desire to make a difference at the airline and will play a key role in its next phase of international expansion, citing the aviation veteran's operational expertise and experience across both low-cost and full-service airlines.

Walsh, who steps down as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31, will take charge as IndiGo's CEO on August 3, the day the airline completes 20 years of operations.

Bhatia told PTI that Walsh's experience as a pilot and airline executive would strengthen IndiGo's operations while helping preserve the company's culture.

"For Willie, this journey at IndiGo is not a stepping stone to something into the future. I think he really is motivated to make a difference. And I can see that when I talk to him," Bhatia said.

Walsh previously served as CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG) before leading IATA.

Calling him "very deep operationally", Bhatia said Walsh's background as a pilot would add significant value to IndiGo's operations.

"I think for us at IndiGo, culture is very important... I think the spirit and culture of a company differentiates it. I think that's something we want Willie to hold on to fiercely," he said.

Walsh takes over at a time when IndiGo is pursuing an aggressive international expansion strategy. The airline, which has more than a 66% share of India's domestic market, expects to induct Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft from early 2028 and has over 900 aircraft on order.

Bhatia said Walsh's understanding of both airline business models and his experience building partnerships would be valuable as IndiGo expands its global network.

"In our journey into the international arena, I think he would be invaluable in putting all of that together... for a company like IndiGo to land someone like Willie Walsh speaks a little bit about IndiGo and more about the opportunity India offers," he said.

Bhatia also recalled that compensation never featured in discussions during Walsh's recruitment.

"In fact, when we shook hands, he said to me, I just want to assure you that it will never come in the way of us working together. Which I think speaks volumes," Bhatia said.

On succession planning, Bhatia said IndiGo has always operated as a professionally managed company with shareholders providing oversight rather than running day-to-day operations.

"Ownership has always had a soft touch. I don't see that changing. So I believe that IndiGo will continue for a long period of time to be managed by the finest talent you can find on planet earth. Shareholders will have some oversight but that's where I think it is today," he said.

IndiGo currently operates more than 2,100 daily flights with an operational fleet of over 400 aircraft and will complete 20 years of operations on August 3.
