Average airfare on 72 domestic routes rose 20.5 pc in June compared to May 2025: DGCA data

New Delhi: The government on Monday said that aviation regulator DGCA has observed that average airfare rose 20.5 per cent on 72 domestic routes in June 2026 compared to May 2025.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said airlines' operating costs are dynamic in nature and their individual components vary due to multiple factors such as price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in international markets, foreign exchange rates, excise duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) and lease rentals.

ATF alone accounts for 35 to 40 per cent of an airline's total operating expenses.


"DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has observed that there is approx. 20.5 per cent increase in the average airfare on 72 domestic sectors on comparing June 2026 to March 2025," the minister said.

Details about the 72 routes were not disclosed.

In another written reply, Mohol said airfares are not subject to regulation by the government and every air transport undertaking establishes a tariff having regard to all relevant factors, including the cost of operation, characteristics of service, reasonable profit, while adhering to Rule 135 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937.
