RoadGrid gets government backing to expand EV charger manufacturing

Mumbai: RoadGrid India has secured Rs13 crore in funding from the Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, to help build a manufacturing facility for its patented electric vehicle charger, as the government seeks to boost domestic EV technology.

The funding will support a Rs27.5 crore project to set up a manufacturing and assembly plant for the company’s Universal EV Charger, according to a company statement on Monday.

The facility, expected to begin commercial production by March 2027, will have the capacity to manufacture 2,000 chargers annually and create more than 100 jobs.

The charger integrates DC fast charging and AC charging on a single platform and is designed to support multiple vehicle categories, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial EVs.

RoadGrid said the plant will manufacture key components including power electronics, thermal management systems, embedded software, communication modules and control hardware. The company said the project would rely on fully localised manufacturing to reduce dependence on imported charging equipment.

“The rapid expansion of reliable and interoperable charging infrastructure is fundamental to accelerating electric mobility in India,” Rajesh Kumar Pathak, secretary at the Technology Development Board, said in the statement.

Founded in 2020, RoadGrid develops EV charging hardware and software. Earlier this year, it raised Rs12 crore in a pre-Series A funding round led by Venture Catalysts.

The company currently employs more than 40 people and says it has deployed over 100 EV chargers and manages more than 200 charging points across cities including Indore, Mumbai and Kolkata. Its customers and partners include VinFast, HPCL and IOCL.

“The Technology Development Board’s support is a strong validation of our vision to build advanced EV charging technology in India,” said Shashank Narayan, co-founder and chief technology officer at RoadGrid.

India’s public EV charging network is expected to expand sharply over the next decade as electric vehicle adoption rises. Industry estimates suggest the country will require more than 400,000 public charging points by 2030, creating opportunities for domestic equipment manufacturers.
