GRSE bags Rs 1,032 crore contract from ONGC to build four offshore support vessels

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a Navratna defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has secured a Rs 1,032 crore contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for the construction of four Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs), the company said in a statement on Monday.

GRSE received the Notification of Award (NOA) from ONGC on July 30, 2026, for the design, construction and delivery of the vessels, the Kolkata-based shipyard said.

The company described the order as a significant diversification of its shipbuilding portfolio, noting that it strengthens GRSE's presence in the commercial and offshore vessel segment. The project is expected to contribute to India's offshore energy infrastructure and add to the country's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

Vessel specifications

The PSVs will be designed and built in accordance with the Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The vessels will have an overall length of approximately 80 metres, a beam of 20 metres, and a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, with an endurance of 45+3 days and a clear deck area of about 650 square metres. According to GRSE, the vessels will be equipped to undertake a range of offshore logistics and support missions.

Hybrid propulsion system

A key feature of the vessels is an advanced hybrid propulsion architecture that includes electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System. GRSE said the battery system will support peak load management, spinning reserve, dynamic positioning operations and emergency response functions, which the company said will enhance operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Over more than six decades, GRSE has built and delivered over 800 platforms, including 118 warships, for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign countries, the company said, adding that this is the highest number of warships built and delivered by any Indian shipyard to date.

GRSE has also built export warships including CGS Barracuda for Mauritius, the fast patrol vessel SCG PS Zoroaster for Seychelles, and the cargo and passenger ferry MV Ma Lisha for Guyana.

The company said it is the only Indian shipbuilder with four distinct shipyards and can undertake concurrent construction of 28 ships at a time.
