India's fuel demand increased 2.9% in July, with gasoline and diesel sales showing strong growth

New Delhi: India's ​fuel demand ​rose 2.9% in ​July compared with the same month last year.

Consumption of fuel, a ‌proxy ⁠for ⁠oil demand, totalled 19.92 million metric tons, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry showed.

Sales of gasoline, ⁠or petrol, ‌were 9.2% ​higher ​from a year ⁠earlier at 3.82 million metric tons.

Diesel ​consumption was up 10.0% ​and totaled 8.09 million metric tons in July.

Cooking gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sales decreased ‌16.4% to 2.35 million metric tons, while ​naphtha ​sales fell ⁠13.8% to 0.83 million metric tons.

Sales of bitumen, used for making roads, were 8.5% up, while fuel oil use edged up 29.7% in July.
