Cabinet to discuss ban on SMP export
This is a part of the UPA government’s move to ease the prices of retail liquid milk in the domestic market.

NEW DELHI: The proposal by the agricultural ministry to impose a ban on export of skinned milk powder (SMP) and whole milk products (WMP) in September this year will be taken up by the Union Cabinet for a discussion later today.
This is a part of the UPA government���s move to ease the prices of retail liquid milk in the domestic market that have risen sharply during the last six months.
Mother Dairy has raised the prices of milk across the categories beginning last week by Re 1/litre, citing non-availability of SMP and the mismatch in demand and supply of milk products.
Cabinet secretary BK Chaturvedi, chaired a meeting of the committee of secretaries earlier last week to review the price situation vis-��-vis milk, wheat, sugar, aviation fuel and other petroleum products.
It���s a part of the government���s strategy to reign in inflation and blunt the impact on prices of essential commodities.
However, commerce ministry is apprehensive that India may lose its foothold in the external markets if a ban on milk exports is imposed.
