India’s consumer durables market is set for a strong run over the next four years, but the bigger opportunity may lie beyond simply selling more TVs, refrigerators and air conditioners.

The market is expected to grow 8-10% annually to reach Rs 3-3.25 lakh crore by 2030, creating an additional Rs 40,000-50,000 crore opportunity for domestic value addition, according to a joint report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), ANI reported on Thursday.

The catch is localisation. India currently captures around 50-55% of the sector’s potential through domestic value addition, a share that could rise to 65-70% by 2030 as component manufacturing expands. But if localisation does not accelerate, a significant part of the opportunity could continue to be met through imports, the report said.

That makes components the next battleground for the industry. Localisation currently ranges from 25% to 70% across major consumer durables categories, with TVs and air conditioners at the lower end and refrigerators and washing machines showing higher levels of domestic sourcing.

Critical components such as TV display panels, air-conditioner compressors, refrigerator insulation and washing-machine motors remain difficult to localise because of challenges around technology access, manufacturing scale and cost competitiveness.

“India’s consumer durables market is projected to grow at 8-10 per cent annually to reach INR 300-325K crore by 2030. But the opportunity is much larger than domestic market growth alone,” BCG Managing Director and Senior Partner Abheek Singhi said in the report.

There is also plenty of room for the domestic market itself to expand. Household penetration of large appliances in India remains 20-90 percentage points below regional peers, the report said. Rising incomes, easier access to financing, premiumisation, replacement demand and the growth of nuclear families are expected to keep demand moving higher through 2030.

The opportunity extends beyond Indian households. India currently accounts for less than 1% of global consumer durables trade, with exports largely concentrated in regional markets such as SAARC countries and the UAE.

Moving up the global value chain will require more than manufacturing capacity. The report called for stronger component ecosystems, better testing and certification infrastructure, technology partnerships and improved logistics connectivity to help Indian manufacturers compete in overseas markets.

“Capturing that opportunity will require a globally competitive ecosystem,” BCG Managing Director and Partner Mehak Dhir said, pointing to deeper component manufacturing, stronger R&D and product innovation, AI-led productivity and the scale needed to serve global markets.

The report also called for greater investment in R&D and product innovation, alongside wider use of generative AI and agentic AI to improve productivity. A predictable regulatory environment, it said, will also be important for attracting long-term investment and helping Indian manufacturers compete more effectively in global markets.
