BMW Group India President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar said the country’s EV charging network has grown significantly over the past few years.
“India's EV charging ecosystem has witnessed remarkable growth over the past few years. As per the latest government data, the country now has over 52,000 public charging stations, of which more than 16,000 are fast chargers,” Brar said.
EV charging network growing across India
Brar said government initiatives such as PM E-DRIVE are helping expand the charging network and making it easier for EV owners to find charging points outside their homes and workplaces. He said this is particularly important for customers planning longer journeys.
“Today, there is growing interest among customers in embracing electric mobility. While modern premium EVs offer real-world ranges of around 500 kilometres, some customers still seek greater reassurance, particularly for long-distance travel,” Brar said.
“This is where a robust and reliable charging network plays a critical role,” he added.
BMW charging network open to all EV brands
BMW Group India is also expanding its own charging network to support the growing number of electric vehicles on Indian roads.Brar said BMW’s charging network is open to electric vehicles from other brands as well, stressing that the development of the EV market will require participation from across the industry.
“At BMW Group India, we are continuously expanding our own charging ecosystem to complement the public infrastructure. Importantly, our charging network is open to all EV brands because building the EV market is a collective effort, and collaboration across the industry is essential to accelerate adoption,” he said.
One in four BMW cars sold in India is electric
Brar said the growing demand for electric cars is already visible in BMW India’s sales.“The momentum is already evident: one in every four BMW cars sold in India today is fully electric,” he said.
He added that the growth of public and private charging infrastructure could give customers more confidence to switch to electric vehicles.
“As public and private charging infrastructure continue to grow together, they will further strengthen consumer confidence and make electric mobility an even more compelling choice,” Brar said.
He said BMW expects EV penetration to increase further as charging infrastructure becomes more accessible, in line with India’s broader push towards sustainable mobility.
