Who is Kelvin Chiu? California prep school athletic trainer accused of filming sexual assault on 16-year-old female student

An athletic trainer of an elite private high school in San Jose has been arrested following disturbing allegations. The trainer not only sexually assaulted a 16-year-old female student but also recorded the incident on his cellphone. Kelvin Chiu, the 31-year-old suspect, worked at Archbishop Mitty High School, a private Catholic school. According to police, the alleged assault took place while the teenager was receiving treatment for a sports-related injury. The case has raised serious concerns, with investigators now looking into the possibility of more victims.

WHO IS KELVIN CHIU, AND WHAT ARE THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HIM?

Kelvin Chiu, aged 31, is an athletic trainer who works with Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, California. Chiu lives in Fremont, and he was arrested on October 9, a day after the occurrence of the alleged sexual abuse. As reported by CBS News, the San Jose Police Department attended to a complaint of sexual battery at the school premises in the 5000 block of Mitty Way on October 8.

The responding officers spoke with a 16-year-old girl who claimed that Chiu sexually assaulted her when he was treating her for a sport-related injury. She further informed the police that Chiu had also recorded her sexual assault on his cell phone. This prompted an investigation from the San Jose Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The detectives later secured search warrants for Chiu, his residence and his cars. In the process of investigating, they found child sexual abuse material on his phone. Chiu is currently in custody in connection with the allegations, reported the New York Post.

According to CBS News, Cynthia Shaw of the Catholic Diocese of San Jose confirmed that Chiu was employed as an athletic trainer at Archbishop Mitty High School. Shaw also revealed that the victim's family informed school authorities about the alleged incident that same evening. Following the complaint, Chiu was placed on administrative leave.

WHAT CHARGES DOES KELVIN CHIU FACE?

After his arrest, Chiu was held at Santa Clara County Main Jail under charges of sexual battery, annoying or molesting a minor, and producing and possessing child sexual abuse material. Police have also said that other students might have fallen victims to him because of his role at the school.

According to CBS News, school authorities have been informed about the claims and have fully cooperated with investigators. Now, authorities are calling upon anyone with any information about Chiu or any other cases to step forward.
