The US Air Force sent several F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets to a remote part of the western Aleutian Islands this month. This development is reportedly part of a wider North American Aerospace Defense Command exercise. This marked the return of fighter jets to Eareckson in an air defence alert role for the first time in several years. The exercise tested the US military's ability to deploy fighter aircraft to remote locations and maintain readiness far from its main bases. The mission involved two F-16s, F-35 Lightning IIs assigned to Eielson Air Force Base, an E-3 Sentry from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Canadian fighter jets. Aerial refueling aircraft also supported the operations.

Where are the remote Aleutian Islands?

The Aleutian Islands are a chain of volcanic islands. They extend southwest from Alaska into the North Pacific Ocean towards Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. They belong to the US state of Alaska and separate the Bering Sea to the north from the Pacific Ocean to the South.

The island chain stretches towards Russia's Far East. Shemya Island, where the latest development took place, is located in the western Aleutian Islands. Shemya is around 1,600 miles from Eielson Air Force Base in mainland Alaska.

Why are Aleutian Islands important?

Their location between North America and Russia's Far East makes the Aleutian Islands important for surveillance and defence.

During the Cold War, the Aleutians played a big role. During the US military operations, it played a big role because of its proximity to the Soviet Union. It was used as a military staging location, mainly for air defence operations against potential threats from the Soviet Union.

Shemya is home to the AN/FPS-108 Cobra Dane. It is a US military surveillance installation, and here the radar is operated by the US Space Force. It uses phased-array technology. The radar provides information used for missile defence, intelligence gathering and monitoring foreign military activity. Its location is very crucial as it plays an important part in US early-warning and surveillance capabilities.
