The footage shows the shirtless man hidden inside the ceiling before falling down to the floor where he was immediately tackled by multiple Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers who were waiting for him for over an hour. While it all started off with just a reported robbery, things took a dramatic turn and created quite the buzz on social media.
The incident unfolded at Macy’s inside Vancouver Mall on September 30. Employees called police after spotting a man crawling through the space above them while allegedly breaking ceiling tiles. The suspect was later identified as Gabriel Hideo. What followed was an hour-long standoff that ended in dramatic fashion while police officers' body cameras captured the entire drama.
SUSPECT COMES CRASHING DOWN
As VPD officers tried to convince Hideo to come down, the second floor of the Macy’s store was evacuated. Police positioned a ladder leading into the overhead space and placed a mattress underneath as a precaution in case he fell.
Officers pulled the ladder away to prevent him from retreating, sending him tumbling down. Video shows Hideo appearing to strike the ladder before landing on the mattress police had placed below. The bizarre footage quickly became the defining moment of the incident.
ESCAPE ATTEMPT DOESN’T GO AS PLANNED
Landing on the mattress did not end Hideo’s apparent attempt to get away. "He landed on the mattress, got up and tried to run. That didn’t work out so well,” Vancouver Police Department wrote on social media platform X.
The footage shows the shirtless suspect rolling across the floor before attempting to run away as several officers moved in. Police quickly caught Hideo and placed him in handcuffs.
According to the New York Post, Hideo was booked into the Clark County Jail on first-degree malicious mischief and burglary charges, along with an outstanding felony warrant.
