US midterm elections 2026 are around the corner, and voters have several ways to cast their ballots before Election Day. Early voting is extremely helpful in order to avoid the rush. Mail ballots offer another option for those who cannot make it to the polls. The deadlines are apparently different across the country. The information is taken from Call Your Senate and USAGov.

It's crucial to check your registration and local voting rules to avoid a last-minute scramble and make sure your vote counts.

Early voting

Early voting basically allows you to vote before Election Day. In places that offer no-excuse early voting, voters apparently do not need to give a reason for voting early.

The 2026 schedule shows that early voting begins as early as October 5 in some locations. Other areas start later in October, with dates including October 19, October 22, October 24 and October 26.

The final day for early voting also varies. Some states allow voters to cast their ballots through November 3. Others close early voting before Election Day.

Voters should check their official election office website for all the important information like:

  • exact dates
  • polling hours
  • locations that apply to them
Vote.gov and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission's state directory can help people find the right election office.

How can you make sure your ballot is counted

Follow the instructions that come with your ballot in case of mail voting:

3: Return it using an approved method.

Some election offices offer tools that let you see if your ballot has been sent, received or approved. If your registration or your ballot status seems incorrect, you need to immediately call your election office right away. People who are in the military or living overseas should also look at the instructions and deadlines, from the Federal Voting Assistance Program.

As the midterms get closer spending a few minutes to check the rules can save time and help you not miss a key deadline.
