US Midterm Polls 2026: Democrat James Talarico celebrates his historic Texas Senate win
This win ensured the party’s first statewide victory in more than 30 years. The 37-year-old state legislator will become Texas’ first Democratic senator since 1993 as President Trump faces drubbing midway through Trump’s second term, impelling Republicans deep inside typically safe turf.
Talarico was seen celebrating his victory with Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of former US President Lyndon B. Johnson. He had served as a US Senator from Texas from 1949, to 1961.
The victory meant a defeat for Trump’s pick for the seat and provided a shot in the arm for the Democrats clearing their path to retake control of the Senate. Celebrations began after the race was called as a large crowd erupted in cheers at Talarico’s watch party in downtown Austin, according to news agency AP.
Talarico will become the Senate’s youngest member. He will be replacing longtime Senator John Cornyn, 74, who lost a bruising GOP primary to the scandal-plagued Paxton.
