Why could California election results take days?
The first results posted on election night are early vote counts. Counties must continue to count and verify eligible ballots after Election Day. This includes mail-in ballots received within the allowed period, provisional ballots and ballots that need further review. Close races may take longer to resolve.Voters can check the state’s official results page for updated totals. They can also visit their county election office’s website for local results and counting updates. A news organization’s projected winner is not the same as an official certified result. California’s results become official only after election officials complete the required canvass and certification process.
Counties must also review provisional ballots and ballots that machines cannot read. Under state law, county election officials must send final results to the Secretary of State by December 4, 2026. The Secretary of State has until December 11 to certify the election results.
