President Donald Trump on Saturday (Oct. 9) voiced the idea of renaming more water bodies after either himself or the US. Speaking at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump told the crowd: "We’ve got the gulf. We’ve got a beautiful lake. Now, somebody said, you need a river...We need a river. We need an ocean."

'We should have an ocean'

Trump suggested that he could rename either the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean, adding that the new name could be in his honor. "We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or, or, ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that," the president said as the attendees cheered. "Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. And we need a great river."

The Gulf of Mexico saga

Trump has time and again sought to change the names of key water bodies and regions around the world, especially in North America. Last year, the president renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, triggering diplomatic tensions with the US' southern neighbor.

The incident also led to a legal fight with the Associated Press (AP) after the news agency refused to use the new name.

Renaming of Lake Ontario

In August, Trump renamed Lake Ontario, which is located between New York and Canada, as Lake America. That comment came amid a spat with Canadian leaders over bilateral trade and tariffs.

Trump can use his executive authority as president to rename water bodies or other geographical features. Private companies, such as Google, have acceded to Trump’s new names.

New Mexico or 'New America'?

Last month, Trump suggested renaming the New Mexico state as "New America". In a later statement, he said it would be up to up to New Mexicans to make that change. "I’m not going to push it, but a lot of people are liking it a lot," the Republican said in a video made to endorse a congressional candidate in the state.

Trump's suggestion on Hormuz

Also in September, Trump floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz -- the vital oil chokepoint that has determined the terms of the ongoing US-Iran war -- as "Trump Strait". The president made the comment in a post on Truth Social, writing: "Now that we have it [the strait] under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???"

Last year, months before the war began, it was reported that the Trump administration planned to start referring to the Persian Gulf as the Gulf of Arabia, sparking outrage from leaders in Iran.
