All full-time police officers in Milner, Georgia, have submitted resignations, along with the city manager. City Manager Tausha Grose announced the exits at an October 19 city council meeting, saying that the police officers' last day would be Oct. 28 while hers would be Oct. 30.

The resignations include those of Milner Police Chief Lamar Bunn and the department's other full-time officers. Grose said most of the department's part-time volunteer officers had also tendered resignations. The announcement comes amid a dispute between the police force and the city leadership.

The allegations against the mayor

Bunn has accused the city's mayor of secretly placing a tracker on his truck. The police chief also said that he had been falsely accused of having an affair with Grose. He said that officers could not trust that cameras or tracking devices would not be used without their knowledge.

"If I cannot do my job, if I'm not given an opportunity to do my job with character, I can't do it," he said. The police chief added that he had not asked the other officers to resign.

Bunn hopes dispute can be resolved

Bunn has expressed hope in resolving the issue before his departure date of Oct. 28. "So it's the trust issue. If it can be fixed, we need to fix it," he said.

"I'm looking for a glimmer of hope to stay in the city. I don't know why. It's because I've devoted my life to Lamar County. 15, 16 years with the sheriff's office and now I'm back here in this county. My dad was here in '74 policing with his police department. I got roots here," he added.

The police department also had disagreements with the city leadership on several other issues, including police overtime and a plan to bar officers from using city vehicles for part-time work.

What does the mayor say?

Milner Mayor Craig Timmons told The Herald Gazette that he had not expected the resignations. Asked whether he had placed a tracker on Bunn's vehicle, he declined to directly comment, according to the local newspaper.

What happens once the officers leave?

An officer who spoke to CBS News said the force had given Timmons and the council time to resolve the matter, adding that they were hopeful. If things do not work out, the officer said most of them will go to work for other agencies.

Former council member Skip Seda told the council he will push to unincorporate Milner if the city's police forge is gone.
