Social Security COLA 2027: Could your bigger check affect medicare savings or extra help?

A higher Social Security payment in 2027 may bring relief, but some retirees worry about losing Medicare assistance. A COLA increase can affect income calculations for programs such as Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help. Still, a bigger chec...

A 2027 Social Security COLA increase could raise monthly checks, but could it affect eligibility for Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help?
A bigger Social Security check in 2027 might provide a little wiggle room for retirees as the bills of daily life continue to pile up. But there’s another worry for those who depend on Medicare help. Would a larger monthly check jeopardise their current benefits?

The answer isn't the same for everyone. A cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) can affect income calculations, but it doesn't automatically end eligibility for Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help. The rules, updated income limits and a person's financial circumstances all matter.

How much could Social Security’s 2027 raise affect your Medicare benefits?

Forecasters expect the 2027 COLA near 3.5%, which would add about $72 a month to a typical retiree’s benefit of roughly $2,071. The official number is due today, so treat that estimate as a placeholder until the Social Security Administration confirms it.

Most people on Medicare pay the Part B premium straight from their check, and the 2026 amount is $202.90 a month. The 2027 premium usually comes out in mid-November, so your real raise stays unclear until then.

How a bigger check crosses income limits

Medicare Savings Programs set monthly income caps, and a COLA counts toward them. In 2026, a single person’s limits are $1,350 for QMB, $1,616 for SLMB and $1,816 for QI, each including a $20 disregard.

Take someone at $1,320 a month, a figure I picked for illustration. A 3.5% raise lifts them to about $1,366, just over the QMB cap. They’d likely shift to SLMB, which still pays the Part B premium but doesn’t cover deductibles or copays.

Extra Help for drug costs has its own ceiling. A single person needs income under $2,015 and assets under $18,090. Savings program enrollment also brings Extra Help automatically, so losing one can leave you qualifying on your own income.

Check your numbers before January arrives

Some states soften the jump. Montana, for one, disregards the COLA for current recipients until new limits take effect, though rules vary by state.

SSA sends personalized notices in early December. Compare that new amount against your state’s limits before the January payment lands.
