More Publix supermarket locations have been added to the list of recent closures. Some will eventually return. Three affected stores are redevelopment projects. New Publix supermarkets will replace them. Other locations appear to have closed permanently.

Seven addresses now feature in recent closure coverage. Two Georgia supermarkets actually shut in December 2025, despite appearing on several 2026 lists.

Is Publix Closing Stores Because the Company Is Struggling?

Publix is not planning a broad retreat. The company operates more than 1,440 supermarkets across eight southeastern states.

Second-quarter sales reached $15.7 billion, up 1% from the previous year. Comparable-store sales fell 0.5%. Quarterly net earnings rose 20.5% to about $1.7 billion, as per a report by Inc.

Publix has described closures as a routine part of managing its property network. The company regularly replaces older supermarkets. Locations that miss performance expectations may also close.

Why Would Publix Demolish a Store Instead of Renovating It?

Older supermarkets can be expensive to modernise. Developer Shai Wolkowicki told Inc. that rebuilding may make sense when renovation costs approach the price of constructing a new store.

A fresh building allows Publix to install modern refrigeration and energy systems. Designers can also create better loading areas and online-pickup spaces.

Parking lots can be redesigned around current traffic patterns. Renovations must work around existing walls, which can limit changes.

The strategy can produce a better supermarket in the long run. Local customers still face months of disruption while construction continues.
