New Hampshire Midterm Elections 2026: What voter ID do you need to cast your ballot?

As the midterm elections are on November 3, 2026, New Hampshire voters should know that they must show identification at their polling place to receive a ballot. The state accepts specific photo IDs, including driver’s licenses, passports and military identification cards. Voters without an approved ID may have their identity verified by election officials or obtain a free photo ID for voting through the New Hampshire DMV.

What ID do you need to vote in New Hampshire?

According to the New Hampshire Secretary of State, registered voters must show proof of identity at their polling place before receiving a ballot.

Accepted forms of identification include:

• A driver’s license issued by any state or the federal government.
• A non-driver ID card issued by the New Hampshire DMV or another state’s motor vehicle agency.
• A New Hampshire photo ID issued specifically for voting.
• A US armed services identification card.
• A US passport or passport card.

The ID must have an expiration date or date of issuance. For voting purposes, it remains valid for five years beyond its expiration date.

Voters without one of the listed IDs can ask the supervisors of the checklist to verify their identity. Election officials will determine whether a moderator, clerk, supervisor or selectman can confirm the voter’s identity through personal knowledge.

Eligible voters can also obtain a free photo ID specifically for voting from the New Hampshire DMV. They must first get a voucher from their local town or city clerk or the Secretary of State.

Voters can check the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s website for additional election information and contact details.

Registered voters do not need to bring proof of age, domicile or US citizenship to the polling place to cast their ballots. Those documents are required when registering to vote, not when voting as an already registered voter.

People planning to register on Election Day should review the state’s official Election Day registration guidance before you visit the polling place.
