Michael Mann injured in accidental gun discharge at Los Angeles shooting range-here's what happened

Filmmaker Michael Mann was taken to hospital following an accident at a gun range in Los Angeles on Saturday 31st October. The 83-year-old director sustained what his representative described as a superficial injury when a weapon went off while holstered. The shooting was accidental according to the police. Mann is stable at hospital and has now been released following treatment. The incident took place at a legitimate gun range, a place where Mann (an experienced target shooter) had been going for some time.

What happened to Michael Mann at the gun range

Mann was injured around 4pm on Saturday. His representative says the weapon fired whilst still in the holster, resulting in a superficial injury to the filmmaker. "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released," said Mann's spokesperson to PEOPLE.


The LAPD also confirmed that officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue.

In a statement to PEOPLE the LAPD said: "Yesterday at around 4 p.m., officers responded to the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue for a radio call for shots fired at that location. Responding units’ investigation determined the shooting to be accidental. The subject was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. An injury report was completed."

TMZ (who were the first to report it) have a source who says it happened at The Range LA. They also report that both police and the L.A. Fire Department responded.

Michael Mann remains active in Hollywood

Mann has been a name around in Hollywood for a long time. He started out in the business in the 60s and has directed a number of films over the years including Thief, Manhunter, Heat, Ali, Public Enemies, Blackhat and Ferrari. His most recent film as a director was Ferrari (2023) with Adam Driver. He's also in the process of developing a sequel to Heat, which is due to start filming early next year.
