Jalen Hurts could be out for the rest of the 2026 NFL season after doctors found blood clots in his leg and both lungs. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is receiving treatment and cannot take part in football activities while taking blood-thinning medication.

The news is worrying for Eagles fans, but there is some reassurance about his recovery. The team and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, said Monday that he is stable and expected to make a full recovery, as per a report by ESPN and NBC News.

Is Jalen Hurts out for the rest of the season

Hurts is likely to miss the rest of the season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Rapoport reported that his treatment is expected to last at least three months.

The quarterback last played on October 11, when the Eagles lost 19-17 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. He then missed Philadelphia’s 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Hurts was first diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his calf. Further tests revealed a more serious condition: deep vein thrombosis, along with blood clots in both lungs.

In a statement released Monday, the Eagles and Lynn confirmed the diagnosis.

“After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli,” the statement said.

The statement also said Hurts is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.”

What does the diagnosis mean for Hurts’ return

For now, Jalen Hurts cannot return to football activities while he is taking anticoagulant medication, commonly known as blood thinners. These medicines can increase the risk of bleeding, making contact sports unsafe during treatment. The Eagles have not announced a return date. However, with treatment expected to take at least three months, a return during the 2026 season looks unlikely.

The team also made clear that Hurts will remain involved with the Eagles while he recovers. He is expected to continue conditioning and spending time with the team, even if he cannot play.

“Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the statement said. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”

Hurts’ health comes first as Eagles face uncertainty

The focus is on his health rather than football. The Eagles have not officially confirmed that he will miss the entire season, but reports suggest that outcome is likely. Fans will have to wait for further updates as Hurts continues treatment. The encouraging news is that the team expects him to recover fully, even if his return to the field takes time.
