IRS is not sending $4,427 payments right now: When eligible taxpayers can claim the 2026 EITC
The IRS has set the maximum Earned Income Tax Credit at $4,427 for 2026 for eligible workers with one qualifying child. The IRS set these amounts for tax year 2026, and the returns for that year are filed in 2027. The money isn’t a stimulus check ...

The IRS sets the 2026 Earned Income Tax Credit at up to $4,427 for eligible workers, with income limits and qualifying child requirements.
No one is receiving it yet, and no one can claim it yet.
Filing a tax return doesn't automatically qualify someone for the credit. The IRS looks at income, filing status and family details before determining eligibility. People claiming the credit for 2026 will generally file their returns in 2027.
Which workers qualify for the tax credit?
The maximum credit depends on the number of qualifying children. For 2026, eligible taxpayers can receive up to $4,427 with one child, $7,316 with two children or $8,231 with three or more. Workers who have no qualifying children may receive up to $664.These figures are ceilings, not guaranteed payments. A taxpayer's actual credit depends on their earnings and other circumstances. Those claiming a child must also meet IRS rules covering the child's age, relationship to them and residency.
What the EITC is?
The EITC is a refundable federal credit for people who work and earn a low to moderate income. A credit cuts your tax bill directly, which is stronger than a deduction that only lowers your taxable income. What income limits apply to the EITC?
For taxpayers with one qualifying child, the maximum income threshold is $51,593 for most filing statuses. Married couples filing jointly have a higher limit of $58,863. People whose income exceeds the applicable threshold generally cannot claim the credit. The limits increase for larger families. With two qualifying children, they reach $58,629 for most filing statuses and $65,899 for joint filers. For three or more children, the respective limits are $62,974 and $70,244.
Investment income can also affect eligibility. For 2026, it generally must not exceed $12,200. Taxpayers should check their total income and filing circumstances rather than assume they qualify based on one figure alone.
Mistakes that cause trouble
Children are the most common problem. Generally, only the custodial parent can claim the EITC for a child, even if the other parent claims the dependent. Two people claiming the same child is a fast way to get a letter from the IRS.If the IRS denies the whole claim, you may have to file Form 8862 before you can claim the credit again. Get the child, income and filing status details right the first time.
Your 2025 return is a separate matter. That credit tops out at $4,328 for one child. Extended 2025 returns are generally due October 15.
For 2026, keep records of your earnings and your children’s addresses through the year. You’ll need them in early 2027.
The EITC is refundable, so eligible workers may receive money even if they owe no federal income tax. The credit is claimed on the federal return, and taxpayers with qualifying children may also need Schedule EIC. For the full requirements, consult the IRS's official guidance.
